2019 Workshops

1x1 Photo Workshops

Group workshops are fantastic and offer a great value and even greater experience shooting with others as well as seeing how others “see” a scene during image reviews. Plus there is always lots of teaching from me during the workshop to those who want to learn. If you want to supercharge your learning and elevate your skills I’d recommend considering a 1x1 session with me. I will tailor the experience to what your goals are and work exclusively with you in the field to elevate your skills. We will also do an image review and critique the images for further learning. If you want to further discuss image processing and workflow, I can help in that space as well. I will choose shooting locations appropriate for the goals you are trying to achieve in order to maximize the learning potential of our time together. I can be available for ½, full or multi-day 1x1 sessions. Contact me for rates and availability.

For 2019, I am partnering with Jack Graham Photography to offer an incredible selection of photo workshop opportunities.  Jack has been teaching photography and leading workshops for over 27 years and his vast experience is invaluable in bringing the best value and highest learning and skill development to each and every participant in our workshops.

Sonoran Desert with Jack Graham

March 7 - 10, 2019     $1149

Few locations and workshops can offer landscape, wildflower and macro photographical opportunities as found in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona. We will visit some favorite (and some secret) locations during our time together. The Sonoran Desert is home to mountain ranges, lowlands, rivers, washes, trees, cacti and interesting colorful rock formations. Combine these features with the annual wildflower bloom and we can expect to use both components to make unique images that are possible in few locations around the world. We will also venture south to photograph the plants within Picacho Peak State Park. They include mesquite, palo verde and acacia trees; Crucifixion thorn, ocotillo, cholla, prickly pear and saguaro cactus. In good years, mexican poppies and lupine cover the hillsides. Mild temperatures and a diverse landscape offer a multitude of photographic opportunities in this area. Please consider joining us in March for this incredible workshop.

Olympic National Park with Jack Graham

April 18 - 21 & May 9 - 12, 2019     $995

We’ll visit locations such as the Hoh Rainforest, Hurricane Ridge, The Sol Duc Valley, Ruby Beach, and many more during our workshop. Having visited and conducted many workshops in the park over the past 20 years, we know some secret locations! The diversity of the ecosystems in such proximity makes this one of the most desirable areas on earth to photograph.

This is a great time to be here since the rainy season makes for great sunsets and light. Typically, the best photography here is made in the soft light of a rainy day as we move about the park. The advantage of the rain is that the water reflects the light in various directions which intensifies and enhances the already special effect of the deep green lush rainforests that we’ll be experiencing.

Mt Rainier with Jack Graham

August 8 - 11, 2019     $1149

Mt Rainier, with an elevation of 13,210 feet, it is the highest mountain in Washington and one of the most majestic volcanoes in the ring of fire. Located an easy drive from Seattle, this workshop features locations that include amazing wildflower displays, all with the backdrop of the high Cascades. We’ll explore lower elevations, where the old growth rainforests feature an entirely different ecosystem. If we get lucky we may even see deer, mountain goats, elk, marmots and other wildlife commonly on the mountain.

Our workshop will be based out of the Paradise Inn located on the flanks of the mountain. From there we will venture each day to special locations chosen specifically for this workshop.

Alaska Bears and Landscapes with Jack Graham

August 13 - 18, 2019     $7880

Join Jack Graham and John Pedersen in the beautiful Katmai region of Alaska for an incredible experience photographing grizzly bears in their natural habitat as well as the Alaskan landscape.

We will be assisted by the best guides in the region and go to areas few others ever travel to. This wilderness area is sparsely populated. The bears rule the land here and humans have adapted to respect the bears for what they are. As a result, the bears have little fear of humans since they are the kings in this wilderness. We will be in the ultimate location for the amazing experience of photographing these marvelous animals as they dive into the rivers to catch plentiful sockeye salmon. You’ll capture images as close as 15 to 20 feet away!

We will stay in a lodge and enjoy home cooked meals in between shooting. Each day we’ll be flown into the Alaskan wilderness by float plane (we have the best and most experienced pilots with us) and guided to the best locations. A side trip to Brooks Falls is also on our itinerary.

Eastern Sierra Fall Color with Jack Graham

October 2 - 5, 2019     $1149

Please consider coming to the beautiful Eastern Sierra in October 2019, to experience the majesty of the fall color and the astonishing landscape of the area. This will be Jacks 26th year conducting this workshop in this location and after years of experience, I know where to go. We’ll visit some of the well-known, iconic places, as well as many places off the beaten path.

If I had one place to photograph it would be here. We’ll see Mono Lake, the White Mountains, and the town of Bodie, once a booming mining town that went bust. Today it’s a genuine ghost town that’s in very good shape and offers endless photographic possibilities.

We’ll see the oldest living species on the planet—the Ancient Bristlecone Pines. Throughout the workshop we will be treated to beautiful mountain streams and aspen groves, sure to be in full grandeur when we arrive. This time of the year is the prime time for fall color.
